Why bed bugs do not go away on their own

One fertilised female is enough to start a room. She lays a few eggs a day for months, and the young feed and breed within about five weeks.

They spread along the paths people take: from the bed to the sofa where someone naps, then to the next bedroom. Moving to another room does not escape them, it takes them with you.

Why the can from the hardware store makes it worse

Store-bought spray is the most reliable way to make this worse. It kills a few in the open and drives the rest out of the mattress seam and into the bed frame, the baseboard and the wall.

Throwing the mattress out does not work either. The harborage is the frame, the headboard screw holes and the baseboard as much as the mattress, and a mattress on the curb spreads the problem to whoever takes it.

Two approaches work: heat, or a chemical programme done properly. Heat treats a whole room in one visit and leaves no residue but is unforgiving about clutter. A chemical programme takes more than one visit because it has to catch what hatches after the first.
