Why fleas do not go away on their own

The animal carries the smallest part of the problem. Eggs fall off wherever the pet sleeps and walks, and the larvae live down in carpet pile, between floorboards and in upholstery.

The stage that beats treatment is the pupa: it is armoured, it waits, and it hatches when it senses warmth and movement. That is why fleas come back a week after a treatment that seemed to work.

Why the can from the hardware store makes it worse

Treating the pet and stopping there leaves the house, and the house is where most of them are. Within two weeks the animal is reinfested from its own carpet.

A flea bomb does not reach the larvae. The mist settles on top of the carpet pile and the larvae are down in it, below the surface, where nothing lands.

What works has three parts: the pet treated by a vet, the house treated including a growth regulator, and vacuuming — daily, for two weeks, emptied outside. The vacuuming is not housekeeping here: the vibration is what makes the pupae hatch into a treated room.
